John and I grew up together.... friends since we were 5. Played baseball, hockey, football, and hung out as kids at Cunliff Park in Glenview. Worked on our cars in high school. Went to Halloween in Carbondale. Had our share of beer at Calamity Jane's (now Potato Creek Johnny's). John accomplished a lot more than many thought, I suspect, and he died 11/6/12 according to the obituary I have a link to. http://www.lakegenevanews.net/Obituary-39677.114135-John-M-Conlin.html

Greg, thanks for that link to his obituary.  Funny you should mention Calamity Janes because I remember that was the last place I saw John many years ago.  He told me he was a psychologist and said "go figure" and we had a good laugh.  He said it was a good thing he never made it as a pitcher.  I played baseball with him in HS and several other teams with Dan Ginsburg and Bob Herbst.  I also remember John and Bob and you, too, on the ice rink at Cunliff Park.  Nobody could ever out-skate Bob and I got checked into a snowbank on a regular basis by both those guys!

It is surprising how things turn out for some people.  He was always a fun guy to be around because he was so rough around the edges in HS.  I remember riding in his supercharged Nova on occasion.  I think he got that as soon as he got a license.  We used to race up and down the tri-state going to baseball games in the summer.  I had the family station wagon with a HUGE V-8 with the back end fishtailing at about 90 mph.
