Bruce Lehmann

Bruce Neal Lehmann September 29, 1955 - June 3, 2018 LA JOLLA Bruce Lehmann passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 3rd. He was born in New York City and raised in close proximity to his maternal grandparents and his uncle and aunt with whom he had an unusually strong bond. He also mastered the game of chess by age 6. Everyone who knew Bruce was amazed by his intellect, his kindness and his wit. He went to Washington University in St. Louis where he graduated with an A.B. Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa in Economics and history (1977) and went on to earn a Ph.D (1983) and an M.A. (1979) in Economics from the University of Chicago. Bruce was defined by his love for students and teaching. He taught Economics at Columbia University in New York City from 1985-1992. Since 1992, Bruce has been a member of the faculty of the University of California at San Diego in the Department of Economics. While at Columbia University, he met his wife, Irene, who was the true light of his life. They married in 1987 and he remained a devoted and loving husband until the very end.

We will all miss his story telling, his brilliance and his love of family. A great light went out in the world but we are all grateful for having had Bruce in our lives. In lieu of flowers, as Bruce was so committed to education and the pursuit of knowledge, donations to your educational institution in Bruce Neal Lehmann's honor would be appreciated.
